28 Jan 2009 12:35 Lightbulb moment - What motivates you?

I'm so sorry that this bulletin is late, but I'm (and this sounds wonderfully showy-offy) on a TV series (The Afternoon Show) in Ireland making two people (and the audience) happier. It's great fun, but it does mean that I'm not at my desk sending out this bulletin on time.

However, I am motivated to keep sending them and that's what we'll be thinking about this week at Life Clubs - motivation, yours as well as mine.

On Saturday I ran my first Resilience workshop - this one was on motivation - and one of the participants came up with this great quote "faffing about is exhausting". And, yes it is. And yet we do it so often because we're just not feeling motivated enough to do anything else.

Another participant at the workshop said that he was motivated by "being depended on" and his wife, who was also there, said she was motivated by "passion". What was interesting was that I think if I'd asked them the same question at the start of the workshop they would both have said the opposite.

The workshop was a success, so I'm encouraging you to book now for the second Resilience workshop on 28th February (also in Westminster, Central London) on Innovation. It's all about making space for creativity, finding new and different ways of thinking creatively and getting perspectives for the future. It's £75 for the day and you can book via the front page of our website.

For further motivational thoughts, have a look at my blog.

So what motivates you? What would your motivational toolkit have in it?

If ever there was a workshop you all need, it's this one. Just imagine what you could do if you were motivated? Just think of all that stuff that's already piling onto your to-do list, how would it feel if cleared?

If you can get motivated to come to my Motivation workshop this Saturday, the rest of the year will feel like a breeze. You'll learn hints and tips that will stand you in such good stead.

So, what are you waiting for?

It's 10.00-4.30pm in Central London (near Westminster, St James's Park and Pimlico tubes) and I'd love to see you there.

It's £75 for the day and, to motivate you, as a special discount, I'm offering 25% off for all Life Clubs members and any family and friends accompanying them. That's £56.25 per ticket. Just pay the full price (book via the front page of our website ) and I'll refund you at the workshop if you bring along your membership ticket.

What would be possible in your life if you were motivated?

The most important thing for you to think about right now is 'What am I doing this Saturday?' because if you're free, I'd love you to come along to my Resilience workshop on Motivation this Saturday in Central London.

This week at Life Clubs we're thinking about all the different kinds of questions you can ask and which would be the most helpful. My husband, a lawyer, is stuck on 'on the 19th of January you were at the Red Lion public house, weren't you?' leading type of question. It comes in to our lives too, with a few 'didn't I leave my keys here?' as he rushes around the house looking for them. Our son asks a lot of 'Why?' questions, from the more esoteric 'Why did God make stinging nettles?' to 'Why can't I buy another bionicle?'

At Life Clubs this week we're going to introduce you to a different kind of question altogether. One which takes away blame, leaves things open and positively probes your mind until it gets a few answers.

And, if you want to read about my blissful birthday, have a look at my blog.

What would it take for you to achieve something you've been putting off for ages this week?

Now, that's what I'd call a Life Clubs question - come along and find out more.
12 Jan 2009 11:50 Lightbulb moment - Wham! Setting goals for you
Posted by: nina
I usually set goals for myself, but last week one of you, my bulletin-readers, suggested a goal for me. He said 'Show off more! You've got a brilliant case study on your website - make sure everyone reads it.'

So, here is Laura's story:

Civil servant, Laura, started at Life Clubs just after her 29th birthday in March 2008. The below is in her own words.

"There wasn't anything wrong with my life, but I was excited about seeing how things could be bettered and about making changes. I wanted to take stock, do things differently and have time to think "Where do I want to be in a year's time?" I'd just bought my first flat and knew I wanted to change my job - though I didn't know what to - but that was it.

I've enjoyed Life Clubs from the beginning. It's been helpful right across the spectrum in a really basic way and has been a fun thing to do every week. The Balance Chart makes me think about each area of my life and deciding on a weekly goal has stopped me procrastinating. The goal I set shortly after I'd joined Life Clubs led me into my new job. The goals help me prioritise doing things for myself so I don't get distracted and I maintain momentum so that things actually do happen.

I wanted to rebalance my attention from work to myself and I'm doing it - Life Clubs has made me much more relaxed. I have more fun, I think about how I want to spend my time more carefully, I find it much easier to treat myself to things. I'm more self-reflective in all sorts of ways - I think about what I want.

It's even come out in my style of working. I used to put attention into things that weren't the best use of my time. I now check my e-mails twice a day and the rest of the day turn my e-mail off. I felt so deviant at first but I don't get distracted all day.

I've changed in lots of ways. Making one change makes space for all the other changes. I have a job with shorter hours now and I've been taking lots of exercise, eating a much healthier diet, having fun buying clothes and getting organised about my new home. I treat myself more nicely.

Life Clubs have so much to offer people who don't have any particular angst or problem, but simply want to live more positively and with greater focus on what's important to them."

Laura is still coming to Life Clubs and making changes in her life. This year it's your turn to join us.

Before I say anything at all, I want to wish you a very Happy New Year.

For some of us, 2009 has started with fighting, fear and illness. I hope it can only get better. If the year started brilliantly for you, then I'm thrilled - let's wish for more.

The New Year is a wonderful time to think about what we want for the year ahead and maybe even for our life in general. Our first workshop of the year, Best Life Ever, is about re-discovering the things we love in life and finding new things.

You may well be like me and wondering at all moments if you're having your best life ever. I regularly ask myself if I'm enjoying doing what I'm doing, if I'm really happy, if it's what I'd be doing if it was the last month of my life.

This bulletin is a little late because I was in a brain-storming meeting all day and then had a lovely supper with my family. I'm writing it in bed because that's where I like writing best - it's a calm, supportive space that allows me to focus. Perfect for my best life ever.

What would your perfect day consist of?
